Skin Irritation: Redness Be Gone!

Skin Irritation: Redness Be Gone!

Inflammatory skin conditions are notorious for the redness and irritation that they impart on the skin. Even those with sensitive skin can especially struggle with redness and irritation on the face or other areas of the body. Everyone’s skin is unique. The process leading to skin irritation occurs in varying degrees and affects different people in different ways, or not at all.

The Science

Skin irritation can manifest in redness, bumps, or itchiness. These symptoms can happen in anyone but are most commonly seen in those with inherently sensitive skin or skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis. The actual inner workings of just how skin sensitivities occur is not quite understood. It is hypothesized that it is most likely associated with an impaired skin barrier. According to a review published by the Brazilian Society of Dermatology, skin sensitivity is most likely due to an inherent altered permeability of a layer of the skin called the stratum corneum. An increased permeability causes both larger amounts of product able to penetrate the skin and larger water loss from the skin. This mechanism leaves the skin vulnerable and more sensitive to products often found in our beloved cosmetics products.

The Culprits

Those who have redness, itchiness, or bumps following certain bath or cosmetic products, should pay special attention to what is in them. What exactly should you look out for? One size does not fit all. It is generally recommended that these Common Cosmetic Allergens should be avoided. Some include ingredients like fragrances, preservatives, or dyes.

The Helpers

What can help? If you have skin irritation due to external factors not including cosmetics, certain skincare products can actually help. Products formulated with ingredients like borage seed and aloe vera can reduce redness and irritation of the skin.
